the essential utensils

setting up a kitchen from scratch doesn't have to set you back a small fortune

but there are some prime expenditures which shouldn't be scrimped on. you'll never regret buying good quality knives (they last longer and are actually safer to use) or saucepans (I buy vintage Dansk pieces that I find on ebay or  in thrift stores. good cookware is indestructible, bad cookware just destroys your meals)

invest in affordable, plain white crockery: a dinner plate, side plate, soup bowl, cup and saucer. buy six of each from somewhere like Ikea, that way you can always replace breakages. same goes for glassware

you should always have linen placemats and napkins. a nice table cloth never goes astray, either

coffee maker

ice creammaker (well, maybe not essential, but...)
